Syrian President receives message from Ahmedinejad on current situation in region
font size

Syrian President Bashar al-Assad received a message on Saturday from his Iranian counterpart Mahmoud Ahmedinejad over the latest developments in the region and bilateral relations between the two friendly countries, the official SANA news agency reported.

The message was presented by visiting Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohammed Reza Baqiri during a meeting with Assad, the report said.

The two sides discussed the prevailing situations in Iraq, Palestinian territories and Lebanon as well as topics enlisted on the agenda of the Nonaligned Movement Summit, scheduled to be held in Cuba on Sept. 11-14, it added, without giving further details.

On Friday, Baqiri held a meeting with Syrian Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal Miqdad in which they "expressed pride over the victory that the Lebanese national resistance has achieved and the gathering of the Lebanese people around the resistance", SANA said.

Damascus and Tehran, both supporters of the Lebanese Shiite Hezbollah group, have been accused by Israel and the U.S. for providing weapons to the militant group, an allegation denied by the two countries.

Israel launched massive attacks in neighboring Lebanon on July 12 after two soldiers was kidnapped by Hezbollah in crossborder raids.

A ceasefire brokered by the United Nations took into effect on Aug.14 after the month-long war killed some 1,200 Lebaneses, mostly of them were civilians, and about 156 Israelis.
