Iran's deputy FM visits Cairo
font size

Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Mohamed Reza Baqiri arrived in Cairo on Saturday on a two-day visit, Egypt's MENA news agency reported.

The visit came as world powers are still reviewing Iran's response on Tuesday to a six-nation package of incentives offered by the United States, Russia, China, France, Britain and Germany.

During his visit, Baqiri will hold talks with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and Arab League Secretary General Amr Moussa, said MENA.

Baqiri was quoted as saying that he would brief Egyptian officials and the Arab League chief on details of the Iranian response to the package authored by the six nations in June.

Cairo was the second leg of Baqiri's regional tour, which has already taken him to Syria and would also take him to other Arab and Islamic countries.

Earlier on Tuesday, Iran's chief nuclear negotiator Ali Larijani issued Iran's official reply to the six-nation package, but the response letter gave no promise to halt the enrichment work.

The West has accused Iran of trying to produce nuclear weapons under a civilian cover, a charge has repeatedly denied by Tehran.

The UN Security Council has recently adopted a resolution urging Iran to suspend by Aug. 31 all enrichment-related and reprocessing activities, or it will face the prospect of sanctions.
