font size

The European Union (EU) welcomed on Saturday the conclusion of negotiations on the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

"I welcome wholeheartedly the conclusion of the negotiations on the comprehensive UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, which represents a major success," said Vladimir Spidla, EU commissioner for jobs and social affairs.

"The (European) Commission participated actively in the negotiations and the European Community will be a party to this Human Rights Treaty."

The convention establishes clearly that disability is a Human Rights issue and that persons with disabilities shall enjoy the full range of Human Rights and fundamental freedoms.
