Fatah calls for forming Palestinian coalition governmentThe Central Committee of the Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas' Fatah movement called on Saturday for a coalition government to end power struggle between Abbas and the Hamas-led government. "The formation of a national-unity government will help coordinate the relations between the institutions that belong to the Presidency and the government," said a statement issued by the Central Committee. The Central Committee ended on Saturday a three-day meeting which was held in Amman with the participation of President Mahmoud Abbas, also a senior member of the committee. Meanwhile, Central Committee member Abbas Zaki told Palestinian radio Voice of Palestine that members of the committee asked Abbas to present a new political initiative to the United Nations. He went on to say that the plan would be based on the Arab Peace Initiative that was adopted in the 2002 Arab League summit in Beirut which calls on Israel to withdraw to the 1967 borders and the creation of an independent Palestinian statehood alongside Israel. The Central Committee also decided to hold the 6th general conference of Fatah in March 2007, said Zaki, adding that the exact date and place to hold the conference had not decided yet.
