font size

The death toll in a series of bombings, including one at a popular market, in eastern Baghdad on Thursday rose to 43, an Interior Ministry source told Xinhua.

A total of 160 people were wounded in the attacks.

A car bomb ripped through a market in al-Ameen district in eastern Baghdad shortly after 7:00 p.m. (1500 GMT), the source said on condition of anonymity, adding several shops and cars were also damaged.

Within minutes, another car bomb hit al-Baladeat district and two mortar rounds hit buildings in al-Qahera district, the source said, adding a roadside bomb detonated in another neighborhood in eastern Baghdad.

Earlier, the source said that three bombings rocked two districts in eastern Baghdad, leaving 19 people dead and 68 wounded.

The deadly attacks came one day after a wave of violence across Iraq killed at least 38 people and wounded more than 80 others.

The surging violence in Baghdad and other cities is seen as a major setback for the government's efforts to restore calm.
