A gunman opened fire at a group of foreign tourists and their guide in Amman's Roman Amphitheater on Monday, killing a Briton and wounding six others, the official Petra news agency reported.

A British male tourist died from his wounds after the attack in the popular attraction in Amman's bustling central district, sources from the Foreign Ministry and the Public Security Department were quoted as saying.

According to them, the six wounded were three Britons, a Dutch national, a New Zealander, and their Jordanian tour guide.

The criminal, a Jordanian national, was arrested and his weapon seized, said the sources, denying an earlier report that there were two gunman and at least one of them is of Iraqi descent.

Jordanian security forces were deployed in the downtown area of the capital and investigations are underway to find out the motives of the attack.

No group has yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
