Paulson to stress need to restart global trade talks in Hanoi
font size

U.S. Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson will emphasize the need to restart the Doha round of global trade talks at the coming Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) meeting in Hanoi, Vietnam, the secretary's chief spokesman Tony Fratto said Tuesday.

Paulson was scheduled to arrive in Hanoi on Wednesday for a two- day meeting to be attended by finance ministers from APEC, which was created in 1989 and instrumental in helping to revive the Uruguay round, the previous round of global trade talks.

The meeting will be held on Thursday and Friday.

On the sidelines of the meeting, Paulson plans to hold discussions with Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung and the country's top economic officials.

The secretary will also hold meetings with the finance ministers of Australia, South Korea and Indonesia, according to Fratto.
