NZ PM pays tribute to Tonga King
font size

New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark extended Monday her condolences and sympathies to the people of Tonga at the loss of the King.

King Tupou IV died overnight in Auckland, aged 88 years, after a long period of poor health.

"King Tupou IV followed a path of peace and stability for his country. While retaining the important cultural heritage and institutions of Tonga. He also sought to place Tonga in a position to take advantage of the benefits of economic globalization," said Clark.

As a sign of respect, flags on government buildings in New Zealand will fly at half-mast Monday and on the day of the funeral, said Clark.

New Zealand Foreign Affairs Minister Winston Peters said it is a sad day for both Tonga and New Zealand.

He said the death, coming so soon after the accidental death of the King's nephew Prince Tu'ipelehake, is another significant loss for the people of Tonga.

He said a high level delegation will be sent to the King's funeral.

The New Zealand National Party has also sent condolences to the Tong royal family.

King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV came to the throne in 1965 following the death of his mother Queen Salote.

Details of the State Funeral for King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV, which will be held in Nuku'alofa, are not yet available.
