Chinese vice president calls for people-oriented science popularization

Chinese Vice President Zeng Qinghong on Sunday called for better people-oriented work in popularizing science.

The work must be based on daily life, which meets the need of the public and is done for the public, Zeng said during his visit to the Haidian Exhibition Hall where activities in various themes were being held for the National Science Popularization Day.

Zeng, also a member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, stood at the table of Beijing Red Cross Society, where workers were demonstrating to the audience how to stop the wound from bleeding, bind up, and fixate fractures.

Zeng said that only people-oriented science popularization work can raise public awareness of health and disease prevention.

This year's theme of the National Science Popularization Day is Participating in Energy Conservation and Preventing Diseases.

Since 2004, the Chinese Association for Science and Technology (CAST) has designated the third Sunday of September as the National Science Popularization Day when science and technology organizations across the country disseminate scientific knowledge to the public through various activities.

In visiting the energy knowledge section, Zeng said that more education of energy conservation should be done to cultivate the public of saving every little energy that one could.

Zeng and other senior officials were pleased to see the audience were mostly young Chinese.

The youth is the future of the country, and an important force of disease prevention and energy conservation, Zeng said.
