Sri Lanka's main Muslim party leader has called for an independent probe on the massacre of some 11 civilians in the Eastern Province.
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) leader Rauff Hakeem said Monday night that "we need an independent international probe through UN agencies."
Hakeem added that the locals believe the police's special task force (STF) troops were responsible for the hacking to death of Muslim construction workers on Sunday night.
Eleven Muslims were hacked to death by swords at the Eastern Province's Pottuvil area, another Muslim seriously injured is currently being treated at the Ampara hospital.
The government accused the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam ( LTTE) rebels for the massacre.
However, the LTTE said a government military camp is located near the massacre site and the rebels had no hand in the massacre.
The police chief Chandra Fernando said referring to the accusations directed at the STF, an independent probe will be conducted and action will be taken against the police if found guilty.
