font size

Unrest broke out on Tuesday morning, near a television station of presidential contender Jean-Pierre Bemba, in the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).

Hundreds of supporters of Vice President Bemba, gathered in front of the TV station and set ablaze tires on the main street. They also stoned U.N. and other foreign vehicles passing by.

The U.N. peacekeeping forces sent out four armored vehicles to surrounding areas, in a bid to quench the unrest. So far, no Chinese residents in the region have been affected by the incident.

On Monday afternoon, a large blaze broke out at the TV station, injuring the head of the station and causing serious damage to property.

Following the first round of the July 30 presidential polls, the country's first multiparty presidential elections in more than four decades, at least 23 people have been killed in the clashes between the camps of incumbent president Joseph Kabila and Bemba, in a three day period between August 20 and 22.

The two political rivals are scheduled to meet in a presidential runoff on October 29, after no single candidate gathered more than 50 percent of the votes in the first round of presidential elections.

There were unexplained fires, during the first round of presidential campaigning as well.
