France's retail giant Carrefour will open its second supermarket Wednesday in the southernmost Malaysian state of Johor Wednesday, the company official said.
The latest one will be the 10th Carrefour supermarket in this country, said its regional managing director for Malaysia and Singapore, Shafie Shamsuddin.
The new supermarket will be situated in the state's second most populated district of Batu Pahat with 500,000 people, Shafie was quoted as saying by the Bernama news agency on Tuesday.
"We are fortunate to be here, our competitors were also trying very hard to enter Batu Pahat. We thank the council members of Batu Pahat for their support," Shafie told reporters in Batu Pahat.
The opening is in line with the company's overall expansion plan to open two new supermarkets a year in Malaysia, Shafie added.
Carrefour opened its first supermarket in Malaysia 12 years ago in Subang Jaya near the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. Two years later in 1996, its second supermarket was opened in Johor Baharu, state capital of Johor.
