Kuwait's foreign minister has met with U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for Near Eastern affairs David Welch in New York to discuss Kuwaiti prisoners held at the U.S. prison in Guantanamo Bay, Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) reported Saturday.
The report said that the issue of the Kuwaiti detainees in Cuba 's Guantanamo Bay topped the agenda of the talks held on Friday night after the 61st session of the UN General Assembly meeting.
Welch informed Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Mohammad SaBah al-Salem al-Sabah that there was a legislation at the U.S. Congress regarding this issue, which would soon be completed whereby the Kuwaiti prisoners at the U.S. naval base in Guantanamo Bay would either be prosecuted or handed over to Kuwait, according to the report.
The Kuwaiti minister delivered an invitation to U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to participate in the joint North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) meeting with the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states, due in Kuwait in December.
He also expressed hopes for Washington's seriousness on boosting the establishment of the independent Israeli and Palestinian states that coexist in peace and security.
