The Uganda Police Force has dispatched another contingent of 56 police officers to Darfur in Sudan to perform a non-executive mission under the African Union peacekeeping mission.

The contingent, led by Inspector James Wakhooli, was flagged off by the Commissioner in charge of Police Human Resource Management, Benjamin Namanya, at the police headquarters over the weekend.

The main task of the officers is to monitor the war-ravaged Darfur and observe the actions of the Sudanese government and rebel groups to ensure that the peace agreement signed by the two sides is not violated.

The officers, who range from the rank of Sergeant to Inspector of Police, left for Sudan on Sunday and would work there for one year.

The first group of 56 police officers left for Darfur on September 26, 2005 and they are expected back on Tuesday.
