Riots in Brussels over death of young prisoner
font size

Rioters continued to ransack streets in Brussels on Tuesday night after the sudden death of a young Moroccan prisoner in a Brussels jail, Belgian media reported Wednesday.

Youngsters ran amok in the streets around the Brussels Midi Station and set fire to several cars that were parked in the area. They also smashed car windows and vandalized a night shop, said VRT news.

Some 40 people were picked up by the police.

The immediate cause for the riots was the sudden death of a young Moroccan inmate in the prison of Vorst, a Brussels municipality.

The 25-year old died last weekend after he had been administered tranquilizers in his cell.

The riots started on Monday evening when word of the prisoner's death got out.

An autopsy on the deceased man's body on Tuesday failed to throw a light on the exact cause of death.

According to police pathologists, the body didn't show any traces of violence.

Further tests are needed to determine whether there is a link between the tranquilizers and the death. But the analysis might take a few weeks.
