Taiwan compatriots urged to oppose "de jure independence" of Taiwan
font size

The Central Committee of the Taiwan Democratic Self-Government League and the All-China Federation of Taiwan Compatriots have called on the people of Taiwan at home and overseas to oppose the so-called de "jure independence" of the island.

Liang Guoyang, chairman of the federation, made the call in his address at Saturday's reception to mark the National Day, which falls on Oct. 1.

Efforts to build a harmonious socialist society in China and a harmonious world required peaceful, stable development of the cross-Strait relationship, Liang said.

Taiwan leader Chen Shui-bian, who has been facing mass protests demanding he step down for alleged corruption, has been promoting so-called "de jure independence" of the island.

Zhang Kehui, vice-chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and other distinguished personages attended the reception.
