Four sluice gates are lowered to shut off the flow of the Hongshui River at the Longtan Hydropower Project, Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region, Sept. 30, 2006. The Longtan hydropower project, designed to exploit western China's rich water resources, began storing water at 9:37 a.m. on Saturday. Located in the northwestern part of Guangxi, the Longtan Hydropower Project is being built on Honghe River, a major tributary of the Pearl River. It will be capable of generating 18.7 billion kw/hours of electricity annually once completed as nine turbogenerators totaling 6.3 million kw will be installed.
