Japan on Wednesday urged the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to cancel its plan on nuclear test while Prime Minister Shinzo Abe said he would work with the United States, China and South Korea to respond to the issue.

"A nuclear test will be unacceptable ... and Japan strongly demands that the DPRK observe the UN Security Council resolution" reached in July, Abe was quoted as saying in a parliamentary session by Kyodo News.

"Japan will work with the United States, China, South Korea and other countries concerned to respond appropriately to the current situation," the new premier said, who also called on the DPRK to exercise restraint.

In a statement issued by the Foreign Ministry Tuesday, the DPRK said it "will in the future conduct a nuclear test under the condition where safety is firmly guaranteed," the official Korean Central News Agency reported.
