Afghan and the U.S.-led coalition forces raided a compound of militants Monday morning in the central Ghazni province of Afghanistan, killing three suspected insurgents and destroying their hideout, a press release of the coalition said.

"Afghan and Coalition forces encountered resistance and destroyed a known IED (Improvised Explosive Device) cell in a compound, killing three terrorists and destroyed the compound with air strikes early this morning near the village of Zakur in Ghazni province," the press release said.

The incident took place when the soldiers asked the inhabitants of the compound to come out for questioning but they resisted and opened fire, wounding a coalition soldier. The soldiers called in air support and killed three insurgents, it added.

In order to eliminate the compound and the militants' weapon cache, the coalition conducted a precision air strike, destroying a large quantity of arms and ammunition including booby traps and rocket propelled grenades, the press release contended.

Ghazni in central Afghanistan has been the scene of violent incidents over the past couple of months as the Afghan and U.S.- dominated foreign troops conducted heavy operation in the restive Andar district last month, killing a number of suspected insurgents.

More than 2,400 people, mostly militants, have been killed in Afghanistan since the beginning of this year.
