Russia urges DPRK to seek negotiated solution to nuclear crisis
font size

Russia hopes that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) will choose a negotiated solution to the complex situation caused by its nuclear test, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday.

"We hope that the DPRK partners sooner or later will constructively perceive the concerns of the international community in connection with its nuclear test and make a rational decision about going out of the current complex situation, not by paths of a nuclear confrontation, but through peace negotiations," the ministry said in a statement.

"We also believe that other participants in the six-party negotiation process should make, in accordance with the UN Security Council's Resolution 1718, the necessary efforts for the full implementation of the provisions of the Joint Statement."

The UN resolution can help find mutually acceptable solutions that will sustain the nuclear nonproliferation regime, make the Korean peninsula a nuclear-free area and take the DPRK's concerns into consideration, the statement said.

Commenting on the DPRK authorities' reaction to the resolution, the Foreign Ministry said, "Each country's response to various events is governed by specific conditions and this country's own interests."

"Russia has provided its assessment of the DPRK's Oct. 9 nuclear test and the UN Security Council's Resolution 1718 adopted on Oct. 14 in official statements made by the Russian Foreign Ministry's spokesman. We continue to stand by these assessments," it said.
