Romanian Prime Minister Calin Popescu Tariceanu announced on Wednesday that he had nominated Liberal Senator Varujan Vosganian for European commissioner from Romania.
Tariceanu said at a government meeting that he had put forward this nomination to European Commission (EC) President Jose Manuel Durao Barroso.
Vosganian's political experience and professional record would enable him to carry out this job, said the prime minister.
He underscored that the commissioner will not be an ambassador of Romania in Brussels, but a minister of the European Union, equally responsible for all the EU states.
Romania was accepted in September, together with Bulgaria, to join the EU on Jan. 1, 2007.
