The United States voiced caution on Friday over the Russia-Kazakhastan uranium enrichment facility and said any enriched uranium should be subject to the appropriate nonproliferation conditions of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
"Russia and Kazakhstan are members of the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG)," the U.S. State Department said in a statement.
"As such, we would expect both countries to ensure that any enriched uranium supply would be subject to the appropriate nonproliferation conditions of the NSG and only supplied to countries which have undertaken the appropriate nonproliferation commitments, including a pledge of no use for nuclear explosive purposes and acceptance of International Atomic Energy Agency safeguards," the statement said.
The statement followed news reports saying that a Russia- Kazakhastan uranium enrichment facility will be opened in Siberia and will provide uranium to other countries for civilian use.
