One U.S. Marine died from wounds sustained in combat in Iraq's volatile province of Anbar, bringing U.S. military death toll to 98 in October, the U.S. military said on Saturday.

"One Marine assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 died Friday from injuries sustained due to enemy action while operating in Al Anbar Province," the military said in a statement.

Amid an upsurge of violence, October has become the fourth deadliest month since the war began in March, 2003. The monthly death tolls were 107 in January 2005, 137 in November 2004 and 135 in April 2004.

More than 2,800 U.S. soldiers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led war started, according to media count.
