A U.S. marine died Sunday from wounds received during combat in the volatile Anbar province, the U.S. military said on Monday.

"One marine assigned to Regimental Combat Team 5 died Sunday from injuries sustained due to enemy action while operating in Al Anbar Province," the military said in a statement.

The soldier's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin, according to the statement.

The deaths brought to about 100 the number of U.S. soldiers killed in October, the heaviest loss for the military in a single month this year.

Since the U.S.-led war in Iraq broke out in March 2003, about 2, 805 U.S. soldiers have died in Iraq, according to media count.
