S. Korea hails agreement to resume six-party talks

The South Korean government said Tuesday that it welcomes an agreement made by China, the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) to resume the six-party talks on the nuclear issues at the earliest convenient time.

The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that South Korea expects an early resumption of the six-party talks, during which the related parties can reach an agreement on how to implement the joint statement adopted in Sept. 19 last year and pave the way for the denuclearization on the Korean peninsula.

South Korea will closely cooperate with countries related to the six-party talks and make diplomatic efforts to resolve the nuclear issues and maintain the peace and stability on the Korean peninsula, the statement said.

At the invitation of China, the heads of delegations to the talks from China, the DPRK and the United States had an informal meeting in Beijing Tuesday and agreed to resume the six-party talks soon at a time convenient to the six parties.

The six-party talks on the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula, composing of China, the DPRK, South Korea, the United States, Russia and Japan, has been in a stalemate since last September.
