Cambodia registers over 1 mln new voters for town, sub-district elections
font size

The National Election Committee (NEC) altogether registered 1,062,687 new voters for the upcoming town and sub-district elections, upon the completion of its registration work on Oct. 24, local media reported on Friday.

The number doubled the committee's expectation, which signified the people's ever strong desire to participate in the elections scheduled for 2007, the Commercial Daily quoted an NEC press release issued on Thursday as saying.

Meanwhile, NEC updated the files of 1,252,684 voters registered in 2005 and deleted the files of 79,808 voters who already died or vanished due to various reasons.

In 2005, around 6.7 million out of the kingdom's 13 million population were registered for elections.

The town and sub-district elections are a preparation for the general election of the country in 2008. NEC has invited 1,283 supervisors from domestic and overseas NGOs to watch the process to ensure its cleanness and fairness.
