font size

Five people were killed and 17 others wounded when mortar rounds landed on a northern Baghdad neighborhood on Saturday night, a police source said.

"Five mortar rounds landed at about 8:00 p.m. (1700 GMT) near the Imam al-Adham mosque in Azamiyah neighborhood, killing five people, including women, and wounding 17 others," a local police officer told Xinhua.

The attack came at the eve of a verdict in Saddam Hussein's first trial for crimes against humanity is expected to be given by Iraqi High Tribunal.

The verdict due on Sunday is believed to bring more sectarian violence to the war-torn country.
