Days away from the Nov. 7 election, Democratic candidate Phil Angelides went on the attack on Saturday, calling California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger "a liar".
"Arnold Schwarzenegger, every day in office, has done the bidding of his big corporate sponsors," Angelides told a rally of union workers and representatives in Los Angeles in the final days before Tuesday's election.
"He's lied to the people of this state. Let's say it bluntly, he's lied to the people of this state," said Angelides, the state Treasurer.
Angelides campaigned Saturday with Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, who encouraged the crowd to vote for Angelides.
"Make no mistake, this is a tough election," Villaraigosa said, "We know that. But we know that we can make a difference."
Schwarzenegger's campaign spokesman Matt David said Angelides' harsh words were "not surprising."
"It's not surprising that Phil Angelides chooses to spend his time launching political attacks and engaging in character assassination," said David.
"Meanwhile, Governor Schwarzenegger is encouraging voters to support the bonds for new roads, schools and levees, and talking about how to continue moving California forward," David said.
Schwarzenegger, who is leading in the polls by a two-digit percentage, was campaigning in Northern California and Riverside County on Saturday.
Angelides crisscrossed California, appearing at another rally in Oceanside and greeting precinct walkers in San Francisco.
