Iraqi journalist killed in Baghdad

Unknown gunmen assassinated an Iraqi journalist working for a local television channel in northern Baghdad, an Iraqi watchdog body said on Saturday.

"Ahmed al-Rasheed, who worked for the Sharqiya TV channel, was killed at about 6:30 p.m. (1530 GMT) Friday evening by unidentified gunmen in the Azamiyah neighborhood," the Journalistic Freedom Observatory said in a statement.

Rasheed, 29, was showered with bullets by three gunmen riding a gray Opel car when they intercepted him in the Azamiyah neighborhood, the statement added.

The incident is the latest in a string of attacks on media workers in Iraq.

According to the watchdog body, up to 155 Iraqi journalists and media workers have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003.
