French DM expresses concern about Saddam's death penalty
font size

Visiting French Defense Minister Michele Alliot-Marie Sunday expressed her hope in a press conference in Amman that the death penalty against former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein would not lead to more violence in Iraq.

"Iraq's judiciary is independent and we have no right to comment on a resolution of the Iraqi judiciary", she said, adding that Europe does not apply death penalty.

Earlier on Sunday, Saddam Hussein and two co-defendants were sentenced to death for crimes against humanity. The charges stemmed from the killing of 148 Shiite Muslims in the village of Dujail in 1982.

At the press conference, Michele Alliot-Marie hailed cooperation between Jordan and France in the field of training and joint drills as well as intelligence.
