Protestors march against federal police in MexicoMore than 7,000 people marched on Sunday in southern Mexican state of Oaxaca to protest against Federal Preventative Police (PFP) and demand Oaxaca governor Ulises Ruiz resign for using "excessive force" in handling protests. Organizations involved in the march in Oaxaca city, capital of the Oaxaca state, included the Oaxaca People's Popular Assembly, the Francisco Villa Popular Front and the National Autonomous University of Mexico's General Strike Council. They said that the PFP in particular had been using excessive force in dealing with protests against Oaxaca governor Ruiz. Since May, protestors including trade unionists, leftists and Indian groups have been gathering in Oaxaca to press for their demand for Ruiz's ouster. They accused Ruiz of rigging the 2004 election and using violence against his opponents. Three people were killed on Oct. 27 when gunmen, reported to be off-duty police officers, attacked protestors in a demonstration. In a violent conflict on a university campus on Thursday, at least 20 protesters, 10 police officers and three news photographers were injured. About six demonstrators were arrested. Source: Xinhua |
