Chinese top legislator Wu Bangguo said Monday in Beijing that he hopes China and Algeria will improve political, economic and cultural cooperation to further strengthen bilateral strategic cooperation.

Wu made the remarks when meeting with Algerian President Abdelaziz Bouteflika, who is here for a state visit. Their meeting was held after a historic two-day summit of the Forum on China- Africa Cooperation in Beijing.

Hailing the traditional ties, Wu said the two countries have supported each other over the years and their friendship has set a good example for South-South cooperation.

Bouteflika said the two countries should join hands to face up to the challenges brought about by globalization to keep enriching bilateral strategic cooperative relations.

He also reiterated Algeria's adherence to the one-China policy and said that Algeria firmly supports China's efforts for national reunification.

Wu, chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress (NPC), also called for increasing exchanges between the NPC and the Algerian Parliament, saying that such efforts will boost the all-round development of bilateral ties.

Algeria established diplomatic ties with China on December 20, 1958. Bilateral trade topped 1.77 billion U.S. dollars in 2005.
