While voters in some western U.S. states are still casting their ballots, some candidates in eastern states have already been announced winners of congressional and gubernatorial elections.

Democrats had already won 27 seats in the 435-member House of Representatives, and Republicans had captured 13 seats, CNN reported, citing preliminary results.

Democrats also won governorship in Ohio and Massachusetts from their Republican opponents, news reports said.

In Vermont, Independent Bernie Sanders easily won the race for Senate, to succeed retiring Senator James Jeffords, also an Independent.

Elsewhere, incumbent candidates were reelected to the Senate in West Virginia, Maine, Florida, and Massachusetts, preliminary results showed.
