The European Union (EU) should revise its timetable for membership talks with Turkey if Ankara does not recognized Cyprus by the end of the year, French Foreign Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy said on Wednesday.
"If by the end of the year Turkey still does not recognized the 25 member states, notably including Cyprus, then it seems to me necessary to rethink the membership timetable for Turkey into the European Union," Douste-Blazy told parliament on Wednesday.
"It has to be noted that Turkey still does not accept opening its ports and airports to ships and planes, not only Cypriot ones, but also those that come from Cyprus. It is therefore evident today that Turkey is not responding to its obligations," said the minister.
Earlier in the day, European Commission issued a report warning Turkey to speed up flagging political reforms and demanded that Turkey open its ports immediately to Greek Cypriot vessels.
However, the report did not make clear recommendation on whether to suspend accession talks with Turkey, which began 12 months ago.
