The Kyrgyz government and opposition hammered out an agreement on a new Kyrgyz Constitution on Wednesday, paving the way to end the ongoing political crisis in the country.
Kyrgyzstan President Kurmanbek Bakiyev is expected to submit the final draft constitution to the parliament for approval soon, the Interfax news agency reported from the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek.
After a long day of negotiations on Wednesday, a committee composed of government and opposition representatives reached a compromise on all disputed issues related to forming the Kyrgyz parliament, government and judiciary institutions, a government official was quoted as saying.
The Kyrgyz opposition started large-scale demonstrations in Bishkek on Nov. 2, demanding the government to carry out its promise to amend the constitution. They accused Bakiyev of failing to keep the promise and called on him to step down.
