Indonesia will seek supports from the Asia Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) forum in Vietnam from November 18 to 19, to be able to chase corrupt people and their huge assets in foreign countries, Foreign Minister Hassan Wirayuda said in Jakarta Thursday.
Having difficulty in chasing corrupt people whom escape from Indonesia and hide in a foreign country, has motivated Indonesia to look for international support and cooperation, said Wirajuda.
The corrupt people with their huge assets being stashed away in foreign countries can not be traced by the Indonesian legal authorities because they are protected and untouched by the country's law, he said.
"Therefore, during the forthcoming APEC summit we will fight for a commitment and cooperation among APEC members to eliminate corruption," said Wirajuda.
"We will encourage for a commitment to cooperation with in the United Nation in a global scale. We expect .. a mutual legal assistance, which include extradition treaty," he said.
One of the favorable countries for the Indonesian corrupt people is Singapore, which still has no extradition treaty with the Indonesia, according to the minister.
Indonesia has struggled to fight the rampant corruption since last year under the leadership of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono. Scores of top officials have been jailed and undergone legal process for corruption charges.
