France urges Security Council to impose sanctions on Iran
font size

France hopes the United Nations Security Council would pass a resolution on Iran's nuclear issue immediately, to impose sanctions on Tehran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment, Prime Minister Dominique Galouzeau de Villepin said on Sunday.

"Our only purpose is to prod Iran to confirm its commitment to the international community, because a nuclear-armed Iran is unacceptable," he told a meeting of the World Jewish Congress' governing board, adding that France supported "progressive, targeted and reversible" sanctions on Tehran.

He also called on the international community to stand united if Tehran refused to commit itself to suspending uranium enrichment as demanded by the United Nations.

Britain, China, France, Russia, the United States and Germany will resume talks Monday to discuss possible sanctions against Iran.
