The so-called China environment threat theory is groundless with a lack of evidence from international laws, says a report on the anticipation and a way out for the country's environment and development issued by the fifth session of the Third China Environment and Development International Cooperation Committee that ended on Sunday.
The First Business News reported that China exports commodity products while retaining pollutants due to its trade mix based chiefly on material goods. Hence, it has suffered from a greater negative environment impact, to the neglect of its positive environment returns that have been brought to other nations.
The former director of the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) referred to the environment impact in the wake of China's economic growth as the outcome of a transfer of the international division of businesses or industries.
Chinese experts held that Chinese trade actions, which have been slammed by some Westerners as sabotaging the environment, such as oil trade, minerals trade and lawful timber trade, all belong to the category of legitimate free trade. China does trade with other trade partners in strict compliance with the principle of free trade without violating any international laws.
The fundamental way out for the solution of the problem lies in the efforts to enhance the management of the environment worldwide and overcome the inefficiency of markets on a global scale, the CIDA director acknowledged. No country can tackle these problems alone, and overemphasis on China's external negative environment impact will restrict the country's right for development, he added.
The China environment and development international cooperation committee is a senior world consultancy agency set up in 1992 with an aim of raising suggestions on how to coordinate the environment and development and how to beef up cooperation between China and the international community in the environment and development sphere.
