The representatives of the Quartet Committee comprising Russia, the U.S., the EU and the UN are scheduled to meet on Wednesday to revive the Middle East peace process, Egyptian news agency MENA reported on Tuesday.

The committee is expected to discuss the latest developments in the Middle East peace process in light of the outcome of the Arab foreign ministerial meeting held in Cairo last Sunday.

The U.S. Middle East envoy David Welch and the EU envoy to the Middle East Marc Otte arrived here in the day to attend the meeting, according to MENA.

After arriving in Egypt, Welch met with Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Abul Gheit and he conferred on the situation in the Palestinian territories and the ways of reviving the Middle East peace process, the report added.

Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Sultanov will lead the Russian delegation to the meeting,

Sources from the Russian embassy disclosed to MENA that the Quartet Committee will meet in Cairo Wednesday at the residence of the Russian ambassador to Egypt.

Meanwhile, Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak received a call from U.S. President George W. Bush earlier in the day, the two parts also talked about the latest developments in the Palestinian lands.

In addition, an official of Arab League has asked the Quartet, which drafted the roadmap peace plan with little progress since it launched in 2003, to play more active role on the Mideast issues as their members have not met since Hamas formed its government in March following its landslide victory in the January Palestinian legislative elections.

On Sunday, Arab foreign ministers held an emergency meeting in Cairo, where they issued a 15-point resolution at the end of the meeting. The resolution contains new measures seeking to resolve the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, seeks to break a western siege against the Palestinians and calls to hold a peace conference with more international participants.
