Albania to take over released Guantanamo detainees
font size

Albania admitted on Saturday that it is ready to take over three detainees released from Guantanamo Bay, the U.S. navy base in Cuba, after U.S. authorities determined that they were no longer "enemy combatants."

They will be the second batch of former terror suspects, detained by the United States at the Guantanamo Bay, to be transferred to Albania.

Albania took in five Uigurs of Chinese origin on May 5, after U. S. authorities said that they posed no terrorist threat to the United States.

The U.S. State Department announced on Friday that the Albanian government had agreed to accept an Algerian national, an Egyptian and an ethnic Uzbek.

Tirana welcomed them for humanitarian reasons, a government spokesman said, without revealing when the three were to arrive in Albania.
