A train carriage derailed and plunged into a river in Indonesia's Bengkulu province Monday morning, killing at least eight passengers and injuring 26 others.
The ill-fated carriage was the last of the six carriages of the economy-class Salero train, which just departed and traveled only six km from a station in Lubuk Linggau regency, about 600 km northwest of Jakarta, reported the national Antara news agency. The evacuation process involving policemen and soldiers is underway.
"Eight people died on the spot, 26 passengers sustained serious and minor injuries," Lubuk Linggau police chief Refdi Andri was quoted as saying.
He said the police are investigating as to how the carriage plunged into the 30 meter-deep river.
