Building of China's third largest hydroelectric power station underway

Construction of the Xiangjia Dam Hydroelectric Power Station will begin on November 26. With an installed capacity of 6 million kilowatts, the station will be the third largest in China.

Xiangjia Dam Hydroelectric Power Station will be built on the lower reaches of the Jinsha at the juncture of Yibin County in Sichuan province and Shuifu County in Yunnan and will cost 28.9 billion yuan. When the water level of the dam is at 380 meters, the station is capable by design of generating more than 2 million kilowatts of electricity, with annual production reaching 30.747 billion kilowatts per hour.

The river is expected to be damned in 2008; the first generating unit will become operational in 2012 and the entire project will be completed in 2015.
