EU observer recommends second round for Mexico's presidential race
font size

The European Union (EU) on Friday recommended Mexico to hold a second round of presidential elections to solve the conflict generated by Mexico's July 2 presidential race.

Jose Ignacio Salafranca, a deputy from the EU observer team to Mexico, made the suggestion in his team's report on the July election.

He said a second round race would broaden the advantage enjoyed by the winning candidate and thus give him greater backing.

Receiving the report, Jorge Zermeno, president of Mexico's lower house, said he would take the recommendation into account.

Mexico's Federal Electoral Tribunal has confirmed that the candidate from the ruling National Action Party Felipe Calderon won the elections, with a razor-thin margin of just 0.56 percentage points over the leftist candidate Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador.

But Lopez Obrador refuses to concede defeat, alleging massive fraud in the electoral process. He was sworn in as Mexico's "legitimate president" on Monday, in a move aimed at keeping Calderon from governing. Lawmakers from his Democratic Revolution Party have also vowed to prevent Calderon from taking office in the nation's legislature on Dec. 1.
