With just one round to go in the so-called Serie B, the second division of the Brazilian Football League, teams Atletico, from Minas Gerais state, and America, from Rio Grande do Norte state, see a victory in the last game on Saturday as a landmark in their histories, local media siad on Friday.
Atletico Mineiro, as it is more commonly known, is actually the anticipated champion of the Serie B, following the victory over the club Ceara by 1-0 in the latest round, on Saturday Nov. 18. The team has scored 70 points in the competition, 6 points ahead of the club Sport, in the second position, which makes virtually impossible for another team to overcome the atleticanos.
The championships last round will serve as a way to celebrate the teams title, as it will take place at Atleticos stadium Mineirao, in Belo Horizonte, the capital of Minas Gerais. The club is preparing a big party, with Carnival on the streets, and a record-breaking number of people attending the match at Mineirao.
Atletico is one of the most traditional football clubs in Brazil, and a holder of a League title in the first division, to which it will return in 2007.
In the other corner is America, which is desperately fighting for a place in the Serie A. According to the tournaments rules, the first four teams in Serie B have the chance to participate in the top division in the next year.
America is currently in the fourth position, which means the team will have to work hard in order to stick to it. Although Atletico is far from risking its title, beating the champions will not be picnic due to their will to transform the match into the major celebration of the team's recovery.
