Chinese top legislator meets top Liberian parliamentarian

China's top legislator Wu Bangguo met with visiting Liberian temporary Senate Speaker Isaac Wehyee Nyenabo in Beijing on Friday, calling on the two sides to implement the consensus reached by their respective leaders.

President Hu Jintao and President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf formulated plans for the development of bilateral ties during Johnson-Sirleaf's China visit, and also identified crucial fields for bilateral cooperation, Wu said, vowing that China will work with Liberia to carry out the plans and agreements in the fields of agricultural production, resource development and infrastructure construction.

Wu, who is chairman of the Standing Committee of China's National People's Congress (NPC), said that the two parliaments play key roles in their respective countries' political and social lives, noting that parliamentary support is vital for a nation's development.

Wu also expressed his appreciation of Liberia's recent reaffirmation of its one-China policy, regarding the action as firm support for China's process of peaceful reunification.

The NPC expects to intensify friendly exchanges with the Liberian parliament, Wu said, expressing his hope that the exchanges would inject new vitality into bilateral relations.

The two sides spoke highly of the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation held at the beginning of November, deeming the summit a very important event for developing a new type of China-Africa partnership.

Nyenabo expressed his gratitude for China's long-term assistance to Liberia, promising that the Liberian government and parliament would adhere to the one-China policy and never change its stance.

Nyenabo, leading a joint delegation of the Liberian Senate and the House, arrived in China on Nov. 19 at the invitation of Wu.
