NZ to send more peace keeping troops to Solomon Islands
font size

Forty-five New Zealand Territorial Force soldiers are heading to Honiara Monday on a four month deployment.

New Zealand Defense Force official said they replace Defense Force personnel who have been in the region since July.

Commander Joint Forces Rear Admiral Jack Steer said the contingent has been training together since October and is ready for the job at hand.

The troops will be providing assistance to police and helping with prison security, conducting patrols and mixing in with locals.

New Zealand has been involved in the Regional Assistance Mission to Solomon Islands (RAMSI) since 2003. The joint peace keeping efforts of RAMSI helped reined in the situation following April's riots in Honiara.
