Australia's largest opposition party elects new leader
font size

Kevin Rudd was elected Monday the new leader of the Australian Labor Party, the country's largest opposition party, according to the party's website.

Rudd beat Kim Beazley by 49 votes to 39 in the leadership vote Monday morning, while Julia Gillard is Deputy Leader after no-one else nominated for the position.

A party room spokesman said a vote on frontbench positions has been deferred until Thursday.

Meanwhile, Chris Evans was voted Labor Senate leader unopposed and Stephen Conroy is deputy Senate leader.

Rudd entered Federal Parliament after the 1998 election and joined the frontbench in 2001.
