Iraqi journalist killed in Baghdad

Gunmen shot dead an Iraqi journalist working for a local radio station in western Baghdad on Monday, an official of the radio said.

"Nabil Ibrahim al-Dulaimi, a journalist in the private Dijla (radio) station, was gunned down at about 7:00 a.m. (0400 GMT) in Washash neighborhood by unidentified armed men," the official said.

Dulaimi, 36, was killed in front of his house while he was heading to work, the official added.

According to the Journalistic Freedom Observatory, a local media watchdog, up to 56 Iraqi journalists and media workers have been killed so far this year in the war-torn country.

At least 87 journalists and 38 media support workers, most of them Iraqis, have been killed in Iraq since the U.S.-led war began in March 2003, according to statistics provided by the New York- based Committee to Protect Journalists on its website.
