Malaysia's auto firm Proton Edar Sdn Bhd plans to strengthen its market presence in Indonesia and will introduce a range of sedan models in February next year, an executive said Tuesday.
Local dealership PT Proton Edar Indonesia will sell completely built-up sedans with engine capacity of between 1,300 cc and 1,800 cc, liable to 5 percent duty.
"The price is cheaper than that of Japanese cars which currently control 95 percent of Indonesian auto market," the company's senior commissioner A. Saifun was quoted by leading news website Detikcom as saying.
Proton has built an assembly plant worth 30 million U.S. dollars in the Jakarta suburb of Cikarang.
"The plant will operate when Proton Indonesia is ready to import knock-down cars. It depends on the response of Indonesian customers towards Proton cars," he said.
Proton has earlier sold a small number of cars in Indonesia, targeting mainly taxi companies.
