Indonesian Foreign Minister Hassan Wirajuda said Wednesday that Indonesia was concerned about a coup against Fiji Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase by the country's military.
"As a democratic party, we are concerned about the succession in Fiji which was carried out through undemocratic way like coup," Hassan was quoted by Antara news agency as saying in the West Java capital of Bandung.
However, Hassan stressed a leadership succession is an internal affairs of any country.
The streets of the capital, Suva, were tense but calm a day after Fiji's military chief Commodore Frank Bainimarama seized power from Qarase, saying it was time to "clean up" the government.
Tuesday's takeover was the culmination of a months-long standoff between Bainimarama and the prime minister over legislation proposed by Qarase that would pardon conspirators in a 2000 nationalist coup and secure coastal land rights for indigenous Fijians, who make up 51 percent of the country.
